Asian Water Cycle Symposium 2016

Based on the activities of the Asian Water Cycle Initiative (AWCI) established by the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and the Network of the Network of Asian River Basin Organizations (NARBO), the Symposium will focus on flood and drought issues in the Asia-Pacific region from the viewpoint of the post-2015 framework (Sendai Framework) for disaster risk reduction (DRR), which was adopted at the third World Conference on DRR in Sendai, Japan, March 2015. “Understanding disaster risk” is the first of the Sendai Framework four priorities for action and it includes actions to promote the collection, analysis, management and use of data, the assessment of disaster risk, the use of geospatial information, and disaster-related education, dissemination and awareness raising, which emphasizes the role of science and technology.

It is the time for us to provide a stepping-stone for the implementation of Sendai Framework by addressing existing gaps in implementing a holistic approach to DRR and thereby mainstreaming DRR and addressing sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region. The Data Integration and Analysis System (DIAS) is expected to play key roles in this framework as it has been supported the GEO/AWCI.

Also, we are pleased to announce that the ICHARM will celebrate its 10-year anniversary in March 2016. Taking advantage of this occasion, some of the agenda items in the 2-day Symposium are planned to be organized in celebration of this anniversary.
